Are your lockers ready for the new £1 coin?

Did you know that as of March 2017 there will be a new £1 coin in circulation?

You may be thinking how will this affect our lockers? Well, if you have lockers with standard key or hasp and staple locks it won’t affect you. However, if you purchased lockers before 1 st July 2016 with coin return or coin retain locks, they will soon become out of date and as of September 2017 unusable.

If you have purchased lockers after this date, then don’t worry we have made sure our lockers are ‘future proof’ from now on. The new coin locks accept both the current £1 coin and the new £1 coin. So, if you do need to replace your coin locks they will only need to be changed once, and whilst the coin is in transition your lockers will still be in perfect use. We’ve made it really easy to replace your coin locks and have some cost effective options available to you.

Why has the government decided to change the £1 coin?

The £1 coin is one of the oldest British coins still in circulation. It was first issued in 1983 and since then it has changed very little, making it one of the easiest coins to counterfeit. Did you know that one in 30 pound coins are actually fakes?

This causes a significant cost to taxpayers, industries and to the general public. Therefore, the government announced back in 2014 that a new £1 coin would be released. The last £1 coin as we currently know it was issued in December 2015.

The new coin will be in use from Mach 2017, not too long away, and the government are acting quickly to get the current pound coin out of circulation. By September 2017 it will not be accepted.

What will the new pound coin look like?

It has a new design similar to that of the £2 coin. It will be 12 sided with rounded edged and corners and have a nickel brass outer circle with a nickel plated solid alloy inner circle. The new design is meant to be very difficult to replicate and will have numerous counterfeit preventions.

What lock options are available?

We currently have two new coin lock options available from two different manufacturers: Lowe & Fletcher and Assa Abloy. If you need to replace your coin locks the first thing to do is check the manufacturer’s name on the back of your current locks. You will need to replace your locks with like for like (e.g. the same lock manufacturer).

If you’re a little unsure or have a different manufacturer’s name on the back of your lock please take a photo and email it to us at sales@direct2u.co.uk. We’ll be more than happy to help you and find the right locks for your lockers!
