Happy Zero Waste Week! ♻️ From the 1st – 5th September, we are doing our bit to support this award winning campaign! The overall goal is to reduce landfill waste, whilst simultaneously saving you money by encouraging individuals to reduce, reuse, refuse and recycle.
At Direct2U, we are therefore proud to support the #zerowasteweek campaign, and want to help raise awareness to the importance of protecting our planet. 65% of employees have stated they would leave their jobs if their company harmed the planet, making it more important than ever for businesses to act in an environmentally friendly manner!
WHY IS ZERO WASTE WEEK SO IMPORTANT? 🤔
We have just experienced one of the warmest summers on record, with 4 heatwaves! Scientists are positive that this is because of the irreversible climate change issues. Therefore, it has become more crucial than ever that we encourage zero-waste lifestyles! Since 2000, the UK have managed to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by 60%. Whilst this is an amazing result, we are still experiencing the irreversible changes of global warming.
Online trends have recently encouraged ‘Project Plan’, whereby makeup users are encouraged to finish their current product completely before purchasing a new one. This is in a bid to prevent overconsumption, whilst also reducing the amount of expired makeup ending up in landfill. But how can we apply a similar philosophy within a workplace?
SO HOW CAN WE REDUCE WASTE IN THE WORKPLACE? 🌍
- Remove single use plastic ☕️: Due to Coronavirus, we saw a rapid increase in single use plastic. In the UK we dispose of 7 million coffee cups annually. This is why we have begun to encourage employees to bring in their own reusable mugs from home! Similarly, we are pushing the movement of supplying own lunches from home, rather than purchasing meal deals which use single-use packaging.
- Promote recycling ♻️: We know that sometimes, single-use plastics are hard to avoid. That is why businesses need to encourage their employees to recycle these single-use items, or reuse when possible. Businesses in England are responsible for approximately 9 million tonnes of annual waste, whilst households only produce 5 million. Therefore, colour co-ordinated bins which follow your local council waste guidelines are critical!
- Reduce paper usage 📄: On average, office workers produce 2 pounds of paper waste per day. This can include re-printing unneeded documents, envelopes and paper packaging. That is why we are encouraging workers to utilise emails and only print off documentation when absolutely necessary. In addition, we dispose of 550,000 tonnes of paper annually due to junk mail. Therefore, opting out of junk mail will not only save the planet, but will stop your letterbox filling up with unnecessary mail!
- Support eco-friendly suppliers 🪴: By prioritising eco-friendly suppliers, we can help reduce the greenhouse gases and waste production. We sell a variety of Pure Power lockers, a brand who pride themselves on manufacturing high-quality lockers in a carbon-zero manner in the UK, the first within its industry! Check out our bestselling Pure Tablet Charging Locker with 8 doors and 8 compartments, designed for convenience, whilst committing to a zero-landfill promise.
- Shop local 💻: At Direct2U, we are proud to support businesses who manufacture here in the UK. Alongside Pure Power, we also support QMP, who manufacture a range of industrial items, including ESD Workbenches, in the West Midlands! This helps to decrease our greenhouse gas emissions, as products are not being imported from outside the UK!

We highly recommend the use of recyclable bin bags too, allowing for efficient emptying of bin contents, whilst still helping prevent landfill!

Choose from a series of vibrant colours, each representing a different recyclable material.
