Small Parts Storage: Organising your Workbench

How does your workstation look right now? Is it an altar of organisation where anything can be retrieved within seconds? Or is it a messy place where tools are rarely within reach when needed? Thankfully, there are so many ways we can keep our tools and small parts organised and maintain a tidy workstation.

First, make an inventory of the tools and parts you own. This is an opportunity to clear out duplicates and outdated tools. Find out how you can store these elements, how often you intend to use them and how accessible you want them to be.

Wall panel

Try to keep items off the floor to free more room for movement and to reduce tripping risks. Wall panels provide a great storage and hanging solution for all your workbench tools. Choose between a perforated panel or a louvre panel. We think that perforated panels are more versatile though and highly recommend them!

Customise your own setup with tool clips, spigots and sprongs. You can choose between pipe holders, drill holders, single & double hooks, angled hooks, spanner, hammer & pliers holders and boxes. If it helps, draw the tools’ outlines to help you putting tools back in their place. Make sure to only display the tools that you use the most as they can easily amass dust!

Drawer cabinets

Utilise the space beneath your workstation with mobile cabinets, try to keep them small to minimise the amount of space they take up. Keep cabinets near workbenches to avoid accidents while retrieving tools.

Alternatively, install drawer cabinets above instead of on your workbench. Use them to organise smaller items such as screws, nails, nuts, bolts and washers. Make sure you label or colour code the drawer cabinets so you can identify the contents in seconds. Having transparent drawers or bins also helps!

Bin Panels

For smaller parts, invest in louvre panels with storage bins. Bins are stacked to maximise space usage yet are opened at the front for easy access. These allow for easy identification and can be removed and moved around. Reorganising small parts becomes much easier with bins and keeping track of stock levels can be done in no time!
