From Monday 13th to Sunday 19th 2025, we are celebrating Recycle Awareness Week!
We aim to raise awareness and promote more sustainable recycling habits among those around us. The UK Government has set the objective of recycling 65% of everyday rubbish by 2035, in a bid to fulfil its Resource and Waste Strategy. Therefore, it is critical that we do our bit to help achieve this goal.
Why is Recycle Awareness Week so important? 🤔
Annually, the UK is responsible for producing up to 215 million tonnes of waste. 46% of this waste is recycled, a significant improvement compared to the past couple of decades. Recycling waste correctly still needs improvement though, as currently, 22% of our waste ends up in landfills.
Benefits of Recycling 👍
- Reduce pollution and emissions 🏭: Landfill sites in the UK contribute 27% of the total methane emissions we produce. The ability to reuse recycling as new items reduces both water and air pollution, minimising overall carbon emissions. Plus, the number of landfill sites across the UK will decline, as there will be less waste to transport there.
- Protect natural resources 🌲: A significant benefit of recycling is that waste can be transformed into a new and usable item.
