Recycling in the home doesn’t have to be hard work or difficult.
Follow these simple steps on organising your recycling and knowing your collections and you will soon we on your way to becoming an expert recycler.
- Find out what you can recycle from home (i.e. what the council will collect) and where the nearest recycling point is to your home. You can use a postcode locator to discover this quickly and efficiently. There is also Recycle Now’s ‘What to do with guide’ which will help you understand where to take bulky or electrical items, or how you can up-cycle some of your belongings.
- 9/10 people have a household recycling collection across the UK, so if you have not already been provided with a recycling bag, box or wheelie bin then call your local council to check that you haven’t been missed out.
- With recycling collections, general waste collections and green waste collections it can become confusing when to put your waste out. An easy way to remember is to find out when your collection days are (you can always check this on the local councils website) and then write it somewhere you will see it for instance a calendar or on the fridge. Remember in some areas recycling and general waste is collected on the same week day but on alternative weeks!
Our next steps are about how to make recycling easier saving you time and effort.
- Some items should be rinsed before they are put out such as glass jars and tins. Give them a quick rinse in your old washing up water before putting them in your recycling bin.
- If possible keep your recycling bin next to your main waste bin so that you can easily separate your waste.
- To reduce unwanted items such as plastic bags try to take your own reusable bags shopping with you, some supermarkets and shops will give you points for doing so.
