Simpler Recycling – New Legislation!🚨There is a new recycling legislation around the corner, and with Global Recycling Day coming up, it’s the perfect time to snap into action!
What is the new legislation? 🤔
From 31 March 2025, establishments with over 10 employees must offer multi-stream recycling if they don’t already. Food waste, dry recyclables and paper/card must all be separated. Establishments with less than 10 employees have until 31 March 2027 to put this change into place.
What locations does this apply to? 🏫
Not just offices and workplaces, this legislation applies to many different locations:
- Retail / Wholesale
- Offices
- Hospitality
- Health and Social care
- Education
- Food manufacturing
- Transport and Storage sectors
- care homes
- charities and those registered as charities
- places of worship
- penal institutes (prisons)
- charity shops
- residential hostels that provide accommodation
- premises used only or mainly for public meetings
How can I promote waste separation?♻️
- Educate employees – it is important you inform employees of this new legislation, to ensure they know waste must be separated.
- Visible signage – adding stickers or signs to your bins ensures people are reminded to separate their waste and know where each piece of waste needs to go.
- Colour coding – this can also be helpful as a reminder, and to make it clear which bin is for which waste type.
With this new legislation requiring you to have more bins, it is important you shop for durable ones, that will last longer, this ensures you will not need to keep replacing them.
What happens if I don’t follow this legislation? 🚫
Waste collectors may refuse to take away your waste if it isn’t correctly separated. This is because they can also be penalised separately.
When waste isn’t correctly separated, you are at risk of receiving a compliance notice from the Environment Agency. It is an offence to fail to comply with this notice and action may be taken against you. Waste collectors hold a legal duty to ensure that dry recyclable materials and food waste are all separated. So, make sure you’re ready!
What types of things need to be kept separate? 🚮
Dry recyclable waste is:
- Glass – such as drinks glasses and rinsed, clean empty food jars
- Metal – such as drinks cans and clean empty food tins, empty aerosols, aluminium foil, aluminium and food trays.
- Plastic – such as rinsed empty food containers and bottles
- Paper and cardboard – such as old newspapers, envelopes, boxes and packaging
Food waste is:
- Scrap food leftovers
- Waste generated by preparing food (vegetable peels, skin etc)
Black bin waste or residual waste is:
- Absorbent hygiene products such as nappies
- Food packaging that cannot be washed
