Are you still without a wheelie bin?
82% of English council’s now provide wheelie bins to households in towns and cities. Some council’s provide resident with a single bin but in some towns up to four wheelie bins are provided per household for different types of waste. Are you however, one of the few areas still without wheelie bins? Do you welcome wheelie bins or are you hoping to stick with your current waste collection system?
One town calling for wheelie bins is Newquay. In early August 2013, it was reported a Facebook campaign have been launched calling for the Cornwall Council to provide wheelie bins to residents who want them. Cornwall Council however claimed it is up to the residents to protect their own rubbish until collection day as buying wheelie bins for the town would cost too much money and it is not something they would consider affording at this moment in time.
The residents of Newquay are fed up with seagulls attacking their bin bags, and scattering the rubbish across the streets. In the long term, residents believe that the wheelie bins would be a cost saving idea, but so far the council continue to disagree.
The council suggest residents put their bins and bin bags out on the morning of collection or use bits carpet to protect their rubbish if it is kept outside.
Wheelie bins are a practical solution to waste collection, improving recycling rates, health and safety, reducing vermin and improving the cleanliness of streets around the UK. Around the UK councils introduced the wheelie bin scheme long ago and it is still a great success.
