Leicester love wheelie bins!

Over 2,000 households in Leicester have singed up to receive garden waste wheelie bins. Since the beginning of March, Leicester city council have been providing green wheelie bins to people who want to waste such as leaves, trimmings and grass collected from their houses. Green Wheelie Bin

Sarah Russell, a councillor who is an assistant city mayor for neighbourhood services said: “I’m delighted our decision to launch a garden waste collection service has received such a positive response, with so many people signing up.” Russell also said to be very pleased to offer such a convenient option for recycling green waste.

Leicester council has bought 5,000 green wheelie bins with an £870,000 grant from the Government. The waste will be collected fortnightly on Mondays when no other rubbish collections are currently made in the city.

Russell said the council were looking to prevent people from putting their garden waste in to their general waste wheelie bins. Although the aim is to discourage this, those who still use their general waste wheelie bins for garden waste won’t be penalised. “People often have more garden waste than can be fitted into a black wheelie bins and it fills up landfill space”.  For the service, residents will pay a £30 a year charge in order for the council to break even on costs. Anyone who signs up to the scheme can get a reduced price of £20.
