One of the world’s favourite and most famous free-to-view cycling events in Britain is destined for Hampshire. Organisers of the Tour of Britain have confirmed that they are bidding to route the race through the county. The city’s main attractions are its iconic landscapes, quaint towns and bustling cities. If successful, it will be the second time Hampshire has been visited in the event.
Famous cyclists such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and Dani King are rumoured to be among those battling it out through the competition. Dani King, an Olympic champion said “I think it would be a really cool idea. I would absolutely love there to be a stage [in Hampshire]. And it would be great if it went near my home in Hamble, I spent all my life here, it was where I grew up and I had my first cycling races on roads around here”.
The race last visited Hampshire in 2007 with a stage from Reading to HoglandPark in Southampton which drew thousands of spectators along the 87 mile route. Cycling is currently at an all time high in popularity thanks to its success in London 2012 Olympics and Sir Bradley Wiggins victory in the Tour de France and it is hoped that the Tour of Britain will boost the sport once more. Organisers of the UK race have said that although the route has not yet been finalised, a return visit to Hampshire has been long overdue.
