The Department for Transport has recently announced the latest round of its initiative to incentivise youngsters who choose to cycle to school.
Besides from it being beneficial health wise, there is now even more reason to ditch the car and get children to cycle to school; prizes will be won for doing so.
Schools nationwide can now be the winners of prizes from a £10,000 pot for encouraging their pupils to cycle to school. The Department for Transport has announced the latest instalment of its Modeshift STARS programme will award schools bronze, silver or gold medals based on how many of their children choose to cycle or walk to school.
Government bodies recognise the promotion of cycling amongst the younger generation and to reduce the dependence on cars they have set aside £200,000 to allow another 19000 schools to join the existing 5000 who are part of the scheme.
Transport minister, Baroness Kramer said that the programme is designed to incentivise youngsters to choose a healthier route to school. Working in partnership with Living Streets, Modeshift will hand out prizes to schools due to the kind donation of £10,000 from Durham County Council Bicycle Association.
