Compared to ages 10-11 (year 6), 23.4% were obese and 14.3% overweight , according to the Health Survey for England. Therefore, it is vital fitness is taken seriously, to promote a healthy lifestyle and form habits at a young age.
Cycling offers a low impact exercise with a sea of benefits. Suitable for all fitness levels, it is great for all pupils across the board. Incorporating cycling into children’s routines can improve fitness, strengthen the lower body muscles. Allowing students to choose a gentle or fast paced cycle, with the ability to increase speed or distance as fitness level improves. A past study showed 8,000 school children over a period of years. It found the pupils who chose to walk or cycle to school may have a healthier body weight than those who arrive by car.
Greener Transport for the Environment🍃
As we all know, working towards a greener environment has never been so important. Cycling where car commuting would normally take place is a great step towards greener transport. Ditching the car for your bike reduces the carbon footprint of greenhouse gases and other pollutants in the atmosphere.
💭Cycling Fact: Just a 4 mile commute on a bike rather than car saves half a tonne of CO2 emissions each year!
Encourages pupil Independence & Responsibility🙌
Biking to school not only benefits a child’s fitness… but fosters independence and sense of responsibility. Navigating their own way to school children can develop life skills such as decision-making, time management and problem-solving. This helps them to become more confident, responsible and trusting of their own judgement for everyday challenges.
The responsibility to get themselves to school, builds self-esteem, confidence and independence which is transferrable for other aspects in their life. This is common in Scandinavian countries which prompts cycling to school from an early age.
Improves Mental Health & Sleep🧠
Healthy body, healthy mind is the saying we always hear… but how can cycling help your mind stay healthy? Cycling in fact promotes mindfulness. A recent survey by Cycleplan found that 75% of cyclists noticed an improvement in their mental health since starting cycling, with 8% even saying it helped with their depression or anxiety. This positive impact would greatly improve children’s mental health when dealing with school, friends, exams and homelife alongside dealing with the daily challenges of growing up. In turn, cycling improves the amount of slow wave sleep pupils can get each night, which will improve attention during school hours.
Can Cycling to School improve you academically?🎓
Running late and stuck in traffic is a common issue with school runs. However, cycling improves attendance, by avoiding vehicle traffic and improving time management skills.. meaning your students should never be late to class! In addition, it allows a social benefit to use this time to socialise with friends before and after school, which may improve concentration during lesson times.
An academic perk of cycling is that it can grow your brain the way it can your muscles. As blood flow increases it brings more oxygen and nutrients to improve performance. The production of proteins used for creating new brain cells by 2 or 3 times the normal. This activity allows different regions of the brain to communicate effectively, and even reducing the natural decline in brain function in old age.
