Sir Bradley Wiggins has been selected to cycle for Team England in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. It has been reported that cycling legend Sir Wiggins has chosen to participate in Glasgow this summer over the Tour de France.
The 2012 Tour de France champion has been announced as part of the road squad but it has been suggested that he could also make a return to the track due to the unlikelihood of him being chosen as part of Team Sky’s Le Tour squad. Other Olympic champions Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell, Dani King, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Philip Hinder and Jason Kenny are all also included in the squad with Lizzie Armitstead expected to lead the women’s cycle charge on the road.
Danni Khan, Vicky Williamson and Jess Varnish will be the women’s track team along with Hannah Barnes, Emma Pooley and Lucy Garner making up the road team. The mens cycle track team will consist of Jon Dibben, Matt Crampton, Andy Tennant and Kian Emadi and joining Wiggins in the mens road team will be Alex Dowsett, Stephen Cummings, Ian Stannard, Tom Moses and Scott Thwaites.
For the first time ever in a Commonwealth games there will be a para-sport cycling event and two time world champion Sophie Thornhill will be representing England, piloted by Helen Scott. Alice Barnes, Annie Last and Beth Crumpton will take part in the women’s mountain biking and Paul Oldham and David Fletcher will compete for the men.
Chef de Mission Jan Paterson said “this cycling team is undoubtedly the best we have ever seen selected for Team England,”
“To have eight Olympic champions line up alongside previous Commonwealth Games medallists and some supremely talented younger athletes is genuinely exciting for us.
“Whether it’s on the track, the road or at the mountain bike course, cycling fans are in for a treat when Team England are competing.”
