What are ESD Chairs, and which one is right for you?
ESD seating is designed for use in locations where sensitive electronic components are exposed. Typically, workplaces use them as part of an ESD-safe workstation. Common in areas such as electronics manufacturing, semiconductor production and laboratories.
A static discharge as small as 10 volts, can damage sensitive electronics. When working on things such as microchips, circuit boards, microprocessors, diodes, sensors and many more. The tiny parts inside the components can be destroyed, making them extremely vulnerable.
The seat and backrest have conductive or static dissipative materials. These allow for static electricity to flow through them safely, rather than building up. Humans create static charge; therefore, they can transfer this to electrical components. However, when using ESD seating, as soon as the individual sits on the chair, the charge is transferred to the chair through contact with the conductive materials.
An EPA is an electrostatic protected area. Areas like this are important when completing work with sensitive electrical components. ESD stools and chairs can add to this area to ensure it is safe. We also provide ESD Workbenches to add to your environment.
Our chairs comply with EN 61340-5-1:2001. This is a European standard that specifies requirements for controlling electrostatic discharge. To meet this requirement, the products must undergo specific testing to verify that they meet the standards. These are:
Resistance to ground - This ensures that static charge can safely flow to the ground
Point-to-point resistant - Confirms the uniformity of surface resistivity
Discharge time - How quickly an item can dissipate static charge
Body voltage generation - The voltage generated on a person when walking or sitting using ESD-safe products
Compliance verification testing - periodic tests to maintain compliance
