The basic concept behind the design of an ESD workbench is to ensure materials and personnel are at the same electrical potential.<\/h2>\n

Electrostatic discharge (the rapid and sudden transfer of electricity usually in the form of a spark) occurs when two objects at different electrical potentials come in contact or in the proximity of each other. If this is to occur it can be dangerous for personnel and damage parts and materials. The use of an ESD workbench<\/a> should provide some protection against this, keeping personnel, components and devices safe.<\/p>\n

The key element to an ESD workbench is the use of a static dissipative surface, which provides an electrical path to ground to allow for the controlled dissipation of any static potential from materials that come into contact with the surface.  The range of ESD workbenches from Workbenches Direct2U offer two types of 20mm thick static dissipative worktops: the Lamstat and the Norastat. The Lamstat worktop has a surface resistivity of 105<\/sup> \u2013 107 <\/sup>ohms. The Norastat has a surface resistivity of 106<\/sup> \u2013 108<\/sup> ohms. Both worktops are also very durable and easy to keep clean and maintain, essential for electrical applications.<\/p>\n

It is also recommended that, along with a static dissipative worktop, personnel are grounded which can be done through the use of a wrist strap that has a path to ground. Also, other accessories might be necessary such as ESD table mats and floor mats or ESD footwear, depending on the tasks being performed and the work area.<\/p>\n

An ESD workbench is essential for all electronic applications and is suitable for use as an assembly or repair bench in the electronic industry. They are also designed as individual work stations in warehouses, factories, clean rooms and any other controlled areas.<\/p>\n

When working with ESD sensitive materials and parts it is important that all measures are taken to protect personnel, this can easily be achieved through the use of an ESD workbench and static dissipative accessories.<\/p>\n
