Taking a glance through our product descriptions and one term that pops up frequently is \u2018UDL\u2019.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

A common question we get asked is what do you mean by UDL? And when you put search the internet for answers incomplete or confusing results appear, so we thought it was time to delve in and explain UDL completely.<\/p>\n

What does UDL mean?<\/h2>\n

UDL or \u2018Uniformly Distributed Load\u2019 is used by manufacturers to explain how much weight can be safely placed upon an object.<\/p>\n

It is a phrase commonly used to describe the load capacity of workbenches, scissor lifts, shelving and racking. The important thing about UDL is that it is an evenly distributed weight, so no single point should have excessively more load than another.<\/p>\n

When a UDL is stated for a product it should be adhered to, as the manufacturers would have put the products through rigorous load testing to ensure it is capable of withstanding the stated weight \/ load.<\/p>\n

A UDL is stated for safety purposes and to prevent any misuse of the product. After all, if you are going to use the product properly then you need to be aware of its capabilities and respect these.\"udl\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It is always called UDL?<\/h3>\n

The simple answer to this question No. Some manufacturers use UDL, but some refer a \u2018Safe Working Load\u2019 (SWL) or a \u2018Working Load Limit\u2019 (WWL).<\/p>\n

Why is it so important?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When workbenches, for instance, are designed they go through a period of testing and proofing. From the CAD designs, a prototype might be built and from then on amended to create a durable and long lasting product. Working with our manufacturers closely in the UK, we have seen this process take place. Part of this testing includes working out the UDL for the workbenches, or designing heavier duty workbenches which can withstand greater workloads, amendments may include more steel beams or using steel with a higher density.<\/p>\n
