{"id":198,"date":"2014-06-30T10:32:25","date_gmt":"2014-06-30T10:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.safety-direct2u.co.uk\/blog\/?p=198"},"modified":"2021-12-03T09:33:13","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T09:33:13","slug":"hse-hearing-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/direct2u.co.uk\/blog\/safety\/hse-hearing-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"HSE on Hearing Protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Hearing loss caused by working conditions is entirely preventable by using correct control measures and hearing protection.<\/h2>\n<p>Yet, 17,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, ringing in the years or other ear conditions as the result of excessive noise at work (HSE).<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways of preventing hearing loss or reducing the noise that employees are exposed to. Some control measures to consider are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quieter machinery or equipment in an attempt to reduce noise exposure to a minimum<\/li>\n<li>Introducing engineering controls such as adding material to reduce vibrations from machinery (known as \u2018damping\u2019) or fitting silencers<\/li>\n<li>Modifying the paths by which noise will travel, for example, erecting enclosures around machinery that is particularly noisy or erecting panels in between work stations<\/li>\n<li>Finally, the last measure is investing in good quality <a title=\"Buy Hearing Protection \" href=\"https:\/\/www.safety-direct2u.co.uk\/ppe-work-wear\/ear-defenders.html\">hearing protection<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hearing protection should be issued to employees when extra protection is required, after other control measures to reduce noise have already been implemented, or as a short term measure whilst these other control measures are being implemented.<\/p>\n<h3>How to use Hearing Protection Effectively HSE\u2019s Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/direct2u.co.uk\/blog\/safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/Hearing-Protection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-200\" alt=\"Hearing Protection\" src=\"https:\/\/direct2u.co.uk\/blog\/safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/Hearing-Protection-236x300.jpg\" width=\"165\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/direct2u.co.uk\/blog\/safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/Hearing-Protection-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/direct2u.co.uk\/blog\/safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/Hearing-Protection-240x305.jpg 240w, https:\/\/direct2u.co.uk\/blog\/safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/06\/Hearing-Protection.jpg 378w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that protectors give enough protection \u2013 aim at least to get below 85 dB at the ear; there are calculators available online which will help you decide which protection is best<\/li>\n<li>Select protectors which are suitable for the working environment, e.g. consider how comfortable they are to wear for long periods of time and how hygienic they are<\/li>\n<li>Think about what other PPE might need to be worn as well<\/li>\n<li>Provide a range of hearing protection as one model might not suit all<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide protectors which remove too much noise as this can cause isolation and result in employees not hearing communication or warning signals<\/li>\n<li>Make the use of hearing protectors compulsory where the law doesn\u2019t require it<\/li>\n<li>Have a \u2018blanket\u2019 approach to hearing protection it is better to target its use to those who need it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For further information from HSE on noise in the workplace please <a title=\"HSE Infomration on Noise\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/noise\/index.htm\">click here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hearing loss caused by working conditions is entirely preventable by using correct control measures and hearing protection.
