Are school lockers a good idea for students?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Believe it or not there is a debate on whether school\nlockers are beneficial for pupils. In our latest blog we have examined the pros\nand cons of school lockers, looking at how they contribute to student wellbeing\nand how they may be a concern for the school budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PROS FOR SCHOOL LOCKERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Save Their Backs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physically a locker is much better for students who, five\ndays a week, carry around extremely heavy back packs as well as P.E kits, art\nfolders and musical instruments. It has been found that student\u2019s back packs on\naverage exceed 10% of their body weight. It has also been recently reported\nthat on average the weight of a school bag is around 6-7 kg. If school lockers were\nprovided for students it would minimise the amount of stress put onto students\nbacks, helping to prevent the rise of back pain reported by youngsters today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security for Belongings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students can\u2019t be with their school bags and belongings all\ntimes during a day. There is always going to be the possibility of students\nleaving school bags on the side as they play sports or games at break\ntimes.On these occasions what is there\nto prevent the theft of the valuable items that youngsters carry around with\nthem today such as mobile phones, music devices and money. A locker would provide\na secure place to keep personal belongings, taking the worry of theft away from\nstudents and parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CONS FOR SCHOOL LOCKERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effect on School Budget<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockers can be quite expensive to buy and install, and could\nbe quite a drain on a schools budget. But we believe the benefits to students\nwould outweigh the costs. Theft and Security Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some concerns have been raised with theft from lockers and\nstudents storing prohibited items. Many lockers have security shelves in-between\neach compartment, which prevents access to other compartments. Lockers are also\navailable with many types of locks to suit all security needs. With regards to\nstudents storing prohibited items some schools have installed vision door lockers<\/a>, which have a \u2018window\u2019 allowing the contents of the locker to be seen\nand examined without access being granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
