A church in Canada\nhas won a bid for $40,000 funding to provide to storage lockers for the\nhomeless. First United, a church in Downtown Eastside Vancouver provides\nprotection for possessions while people access social programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church\u2019s storage facility for the homeless is more than\njust somewhere to store things. The project allows up to 200 homeless people to\nsafely store their belongings while using services provided at First United.\nThey were judged and awarded the grand prize of $40k from the Aviva Community\nFund Competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winning the funding was crucial to the church and anyone\nwanting to take part in their services. The prizes were decided on the Aviva\nwebsite, and visitors to the site were able to vote for their favourite\nprojects and the judges then had the final say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First United\u2019s program was established in 2009 through a\none-off grant from the City of Vancouver\nas part of funding linked to the Olympics. The initiative has then continued to\ngrow from strength to strength with the help of individual donors and\nfundraising. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program has found that having a member of staff working\nalong side the lockers in the storage facility has benefited their visitors.\nNot only does having a member of staff there increase security and makes\nchecking possessions in easier, it also provides visitors with a friendly face\nand human contact which many of them miss living on the streets. The facility\nhas been described as a \u2018gateway service\u2019 for many and having daily contact\nwith other human beings encourages them to take part in the services the\nprogram also offers. These services include showers, social programs, health\nprograms and housing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who knew that lockers could provide such security and peace\nof mind for those in need? By having clothes lockers<\/a>,\n ppe lockers etc these\nhomeless people are safe in the knowlegde that their dearest possessions\n are safe whilst they are accessing potentially life changing\nservices. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
