Marianne Vos victory in the inaugural Women\u2019s Tour was predicted by many with some even hailing her as the best female cyclist of this era and perhaps of all time. Vos has accumulated many world and Olympic titles in cycling both on the track and on the road. She has also won medals seven times in cyclo-cross.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vos would be assumed to be a fiercely competitive woman however she has been noted to be a \u2018gentle soul\u2019 who takes her cat along to her races. However, when on two wheels Vos is an unstoppable force of nature, she outsprinted her competitors in yesterday in the last stage into Bury St Edmunds where she secured the yellow jersey by a good 30 seconds. This made Vos\u2019s third stage win in a row.<\/p>\n

Great Britain\u2019s Lizzie Armitstead had hopes of avenging the woman who denied her a Gold medal in London 2012 but was forced to withdraw from the race before it departed from Harwich on Sunday. Unable to get a good start on even the short and flat stages Armitstead was struggling, then when the final came along Vos was too strong and came out on top.<\/p>\n

The most surprising outcome of the Women\u2019s Tour was the raging success of the event in only its first year. A few weeks before the event was due to start organisers were desperately trying to get a title sponsor. Friends Life were the ones to eventually take the gamble and sponsor the event and they will be pleased they did so. Many turned up to witness the Bury St Edmunds finale with cycling aficionados decked out in Lycra kits and waving flags. Hopefully the spirit of the Women’s and Men’s tour will cause a similar hysteria to London 2012 and get people spending more time on their bikes instead of in front of their tv.<\/p>\n
